"Portal"

This drawing is based on an adventure I had one night back in the late 80s. I was walking around in Travis Heights very late at night. I don’t remember what I was doing in that neighborhood; I didn’t live close by at the time. Maybe there had been a party, or maybe I had seen or played a show nearby (Continental Club, South Bank, and Liberty Lunch were all within walking distance).

Anyway, I was wandering around in the darkness, and I was tripping pretty hard on mushrooms. The night was beautiful, and every little light and sound sparkled and hummed in perfect orchestration. I came slowly around a curve in the road, and there, hovering in front of me, was a brightly lit red door. It was an arched front door to a home that was set at a 45 degree angle to the corner it was situated on. It just SCREAMED “importance”, so i moved closer to investigate.

In the small window of the doorway, I observed a different red glow. And as I looked, it resolved into a beating heart.

I stood there, looking, for what might have been hours. I might even have sat on the opposite curb for a while, staring. I don’t remember everywhere I went while I was there, but I definitely remember the portal. As the sky began to faintly lighten, I moved on…
